BELLE DE JOUR II
2014
In 2014, I produced the second installment of Belle de Jour, a broadened and more in-depth study of diverse female types. In continuity with my longstanding interest in the human portrait and the female figure, Belle de Jour II once again focuses on women as my primary subjects. For this series, I purposely reconnected with many models from the original body of work as a vehicle to address aging as desirable and empowering. The portraits are studiously staged, from lighting, and sartorial choices, to backdrops and mise-en-scene. In both Belle de Jour I and II, a language of provocation not dependent on artifice is used to build an inclusive feminist narrative that rejects self-fashioning rules associated with patriarchal norms.
